Is 2012 The End Of The World?

Due to recent media coverage and film exposure the world has become more enthralled in the idea that the world will end in 2012. This end of the world prophecy has been talked about for years and now the date is coming closer and closer making the world more cautious and nervous about whether or not it is true. Whether or not you believe it is true it may be worth your while to understand the history behind the prophecy and why it even exists. The 2012 end of the world prophecy is a prophecy conjured up by mainstream society with stories dating back for hundreds of years. People throughout history have referred to the Mayan Long Count Calendar claiming that the world is set to end on December 21st, 2012 because the calendar ends on this date. mayan For anyone who isn't too familiar with the Mayans, they are an ancient culture that existed between 2000 B.C. and 250 A.D. The Mayans were astronomers who created a calendar based on the solar cycles. Also, according to documentation the Mayans predicted that on this date the planets are set to align. Since, at least in human history, this has never happened we are unaware of what this proposed alignment could cause. It has been postulated that solar flares, pole reversals, asteroids and gravitational pulls could result. Thus, a major catastrophe could be possible causing the world to come to a complete end. At any rate, despite the calendar and the many scientific beliefs there is no true way to tell whether the world will indeed end on this day. Mayan historians dismiss the prophecy saying that there is nothing in Mayan culture that discusses the end of the world. Their calendar was simply an observation of the solar cycles and nothing more. In the end it is up to public to decide whether they believe the world will end in 2012.
